Knights of Columbus
About the Knights of Columbus at OLV Parish
This Catholic men’s world-wide organization is in service to the Church, and to the needy and the handicapped. Council 2525 supports the requests of three local parishes: Our Lady of Victory, St. Francis Xavier, and Our Lady of the Assumption. We respond to requests with manpower as well as financial assistance that is provided through fundraising. The Council also supports local service organizations that provide help to the needy, homeless, pro-life advocates, the handicapped, and Catholic schools.
New members are most welcome to join in this effort. The only requirement is that the volunteer is a Catholic man 18 years of age or older. There are many benefits to being a Knight, including a great insurance program and the tremendous satisfaction of knowing that you are following the call of Jesus to serve humanity. Council 2525 meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month in the K of C hall at Our Lady of Victory Church.

The Knights of Columbus is our Ministry of the Month!
"People know us as the guys in the yellow aprons we see after Mass, handing out tootsie rolls." Wally Arcese smiles as he evokes the familiar image of the Knights of Columbus, our Ministry of the Month. As Grand Knight of Council 2525, he is proud of the many good works undertaken by these modern day knights who meet every month at Our Lady of Victory.
Council 2525 is part of a worldwide K of C network which last year contributed 150 million dollars to charity. One hundred forty-five members are drawn from three parishes: Our Lady of Victory, St. Francis and Our Lady of the Assumption. Through fundraising, the knights serve the Church, the poor and those with special needs. New members, 18 and older are "always welcome as long as they are practicing Catholics." Wally notes that the council's youngest knight is 19 and "we go up into the 90s."
A knight for more than ten years, Mr. Arcese is a Marstons Mills resident who happily divides his time between parish work and his real job - marketing and promotion for Energy Infrastructure, an engineering firm. Knights of Columbus dedicate themselves to charity, community, fraternity and patriotism. In the words of Grand Knight Arcese, "it's a wonderful way to share faith together and help the less fortunate."
The Knights have been active in New England since 1881 when a group of men met in a church basement in New Haven, CT. and vowed to be defenders of their country, their families and their faith. This initiative led to the incorporation of the organization in 1882. A Supreme Council or governing body is responsible for the development of the K of C worldwide. Our local council held its first preliminary meeting at the Idle House Theatre in Hyannis in 1924. It was named the Father McSwiney Council 2525 in honor of a Father Cornelius McSwiney, the first Catholic priest to minister to the religious needs and welfare of Catholics on Cape Cod.
Today, 86 years later, the Knights of Cape Cod carry on under the leadership of Grand Knight Arcese and Deputy Grand Knight Henry McClean. A list of local causes which receive their support includes Special Olympics, St. Vincent dePaul, Champ House, A Woman's Concern, Boy Scouts, pro-life advocates and Catholic schools. One of the council's biggest projects was the completion of the Living Rosary Walk at Our Lady of Victory. The knights also serve the community by managing the recycling center in Centerville during the month of August and conducting their tootsie roll fundraisers in the fall.
One of the newer traditions, the Father-Daughter Valentine Dance, takes place this year on Feb. 4th at the Parish Center where the dads will be dancing with the stars---their stars---rocking to Nickelback or waltzing with Lawrence Welk. The beat goes on!
