About the Ministry of Hope

A bereavement series for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one is being held on Sunday afternoons from  2:00 till 3:30 at the Faith Formation Center at Our Lady of Victory.   The format will include prayer, music and sharing of ways to deal  with issues related to loss and grieving.   The next session will be held on Sunday, September 23rd  from 2:00 till  3:30.  To join us or for more information please call Paula Connolly at 508-771-2146 or Natalie Ryan at 508-771-4371.

The purpose of the Ministry of Hope is to provide the opportunity for bereaved persons to avail themselves of an additional resource in the parish community to aid them in their journey of grief. Members of the Ministry assist family members and friends at the time of death by visiting them in their home to help them to plan the music and the readings for the Mass of Resurrection. Members serves as greeters at the funeral Mass. Supportive telephone call and visits are generally made a few weeks after the death.

When individuals are ready, they are encouraged to participate in a six week bereavement series. The sessions are Scripture-based as the group leader assists individuals to find hope and consolation from the Word of God. The bereaved explore their feelings associated with grieving and learn how to cope with their sadness from the Psalms, the Prophets, and the figures in the New Testament. Through music, prayer, and reflection, participants find this quiet and caring environment a safe place to allow God to support and love them.

After completing the bereavement series, individuals may wish to continue their journey with an Emmaus group. As time passes, the bereavement issues change and many are looking for support for some very practical questions regarding housing, finances, and other social and spiritual matters. Members meet monthly and develop their own agendas. They are guided by a facilitator from the Ministry of Hope.

The Parish provides monthly lunches for the bereaved which are a wonderful opportunity for people to begin to socialize in a safe and friendly place. “Hope for the Holidays” and educational offerings open to all members of the Parish community.

Ministry of Hope Programs

Bereavement Series

The bereavement series is offered in the Spring and Fall each year. The group meets on Sunday afternoon in six scripture-based sessions. Led by Minister of Hope music, prayer, Scripture readings and reflection are used to offer care and comfort to the bereaved. An opportunity for sharing is provided for those who wish to do so and light refreshments are provided. Dates for the programs appear in the Church bulletin.

Mass of Remembrance

A Mass of Remembrance is offered each year on Sunday in November at the regularly scheduled 11:30a.m. liturgy where the faith community remembers and prays for the parishioners who have died during the past year. A reception follows in the Parish Center.

Monthly Luncheons

As times passes, many bereaved persons have a need for some socialization, preferably in a safe and comfortable environment. The Ministry provides monthly luncheons with this purpose in mind. All are welcome to participate in the luncheons. They are held in the Parish Center on the third Tuesday of the month. Those who wish to attend are requested to contact the Parish Office in advance.

Hope for the Holidays

A special program is provided each year in early December in anticipation of the holidays. It is offered to assist those who find themselves in the midst of loneliness to find hope and comfort in the difficult days. Ideas of how loved ones can be honored and remembered at Christmas and the New Year are presented and discussed.
